The 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions serves as an opportunity for anticipating evolutions of warfare and to discuss humanitarian considerations regarding the use of AI in military decision making. The session will map out a) humanitarian considerations as well as legal, operational and policy opportunities and challenges associated with current and foreseeable applications of AI for military decision making; b) how they are distinct from, or overlap with, those associated with the use of autonomous weapons systems; and c) the lessons that the debate on responsible adoption of AI in military domain can draw from the policy process on AWS.

  • What are the current and foreseeable uses of AI in military decision making?
  • To what extent do such uses of AI raise legal, ethical, operational, and security opportunities and challenges distinct from the use of autonomous weapon systems?
  • What lessons can be learned from the policy process on autonomous weapon systems regarding the what states and their armed forces ought to do to ensure compliance with international law and accountability in the use of AI for military decision making?
